The gFivo project has successfully demonstrated the use of Web Services to provision user details from Grouper to collaborative tools, especially wikis. The use of Web Services quickened the administration of Wikis considerably and meant that access list for wikis are updated almost instantaneously.

An admin script invokes a PHP client, which in turn calls the Grouper Web Service. Based on the authentication details provided in the SOAP request header, the client can then perform Grouper tasks. For example, listing the members of a wiki can be done almost instantanesously using web services. As can other simple administrative task such as adding users, deleting users, and creating new groups.

This greatly reduces the administrative burden of running a wiki service by enabling greater user self service where the wiki owner can easily controll access list to their own wiki. Since these access lists are driven from the central grouper groups repository that group infromation can be reused in other systems (email list etc) greatly enhancing the value of that group information.
